Coromandel Express Derailment In Balasore, Odisha LIVE UPDATES: As many as 288 people were killed and about 900 injured in the horrific train crash in Odisha, involving the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express and a goods train. The accident happened near the Bahanaga Baazar station in Balasore district, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar, around 7 pm on Friday. Several coaches of the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, on the way to Howrah, derailed and fell on adjacent tracks, an official said. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik have rushed to the accident site to monitor the situation.

The Indian Army has been sent to help with the evacuation and treatment of injured citizens. The Eastern Command has deployed Army medical and engineering teams, as well as ambulances and support services. The teams were dispatched from various bases in order to arrive at the scene of the incident as soon as possible, news agency ANI reported.

Following the accident, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has cancelled his travel to Goa, where he was visiting to flag off Goa's first Vande Bharat Express. The Ministry of Railways has announced that the Mumbai-Goa Vande Bharat Express flag off has now been postponed. The train was supposed to be flagged off by PM Modi virtually on June 3, 2023, and was the first Vande Bharat Express for the Konkan Railways.

Opposition party leaders, while expressing condolences over the deaths of more than 200 passengers in the Odisha train accident, have raised questions about the signalling system of the railways which purportedly led to the crash. "Stunned & distressed to hear the tragic news of the Coromandel Express & Yashwantpur-Howrah train crash in Odisha...My fervent prayers for those affected & their families. ...That an alleged signalling failure led to 3 trains crashing is shocking beyond belief. There are serious questions which need answering," TMC spokesperson Saket Gokhale tweeted.
